Air conditioning training and what to expect

Air Conditioning Training

The best way to start out in a successful career as a hvac technician is to graduate high school and then look into a specialized course in air conditioning training. If you are still in high school I would personally focus on math, any type of technical shop classes, and science. You will need a strong math backround in math because it’s used in all aspects of the job including measuring pipes, figuring out invoices for customers, using the tools of the trade, and if you’re running your own business then you will be using numbers a lot.

Air conditioning training apprenticeships are a great start

The first step when looking into heating and air conditioning training is an apprenticeship where you will learn all the essential tasks before stepping into the more advanced subjects. You will learn how to use the tools of the trade, all different parts of an air conditioner, how to troubleshoot problems, and all of the proper standards and guidelines to follow. When I was attending school the apprenticeship seemed like it was pointless because I wanted to get my hands dirty, but I would focus hard on everything you are taught because one day you will need it when you come upon different problems and have to diagnose problems.

The next step of your air conditioning training will consist of being in the field and working a long side a foreman. You may have to work in tight spaces, extreme heat or cold depending on your area. This is the time to really concentrate on what you are learning. You will have the chance to work a long side an established tech and you can ask all the questions you need. I learned a lot from the foreman I trained with. It was invaluable experience I still use these days.

You will also learn about all the various air conditioners and manufactures in your air conditioning training. You will work on hvac units in homes, businesses, and industrial units. Learning the systems inside and out will only help you in your career. In my spare time I used the inter, hvac books, and anything reference materials I could get my hands on to learn everything I could about the different units.

You will also learn about all the different tools of the trade like gas leak detectors, digital thermometers, gas analyzers, pressure gauges, and amprobes. During your air conditioning training you will learn how to use all of these tools to make the job easier and more efficient.

Air conditioning training certification

The air conditioning training can last up to six years depending on where you are studying and working. Some companies require longer apprenticeships then other companies. Even after you have worked in the field for a reasonable amount of time you will still be required to take on-going training to keep up with the latest trends and new certifications required to operate as a hvac technician.

The best way to stay ahead during your training is to study on your own above and beyond what your air condition training requires.
